I myself am going ice skating at the Tower of London and hitting the ice bar for a bit of Christmas themed frivolity (and possibly a drink or two ). Ice skating comes in about 10 pounds and the ice bar is 12 pounds fifty.

It seems incredible to me that an entire tube line can stop running because one commuter is taken sick or that an entire station is shut down because of a lift not working.

Bus drivers have been on strike. This has been kept unusually quiet – so much so that many commuters have stood at bus stops in blissful ignorance for long periods of time until they finally realise something is wrong or another commuter is kind enough to clue them in on what is going on.

My favourite is when trains are delayed for almost an hour because of signalling problems. These signalling problems seem to be fixed for a few weeks and then come back again. Why? This makes masses of trains late and leads to a build up of commuters balancing precariously on a platform.

All this and Boris Johnson wants to increase public transport fares in London? We’re not getting our money’s worth as it is Boris.

Don’t get me wrong I am all for Clarkson, Top Gear’s ratings speak for themselves; what I am against is Universities handing out honorary degrees left, right and centre in cheap publicity stunts.

Think about it, a degree involves three years of hard study, costs of up to £25,000. We, as students have to take jobs and often undertake both university and work in one day. We spend hours cramming for exams, researching papers and reading textbooks. Then we have the nervous wait to see if we have actually passed all three years and then we get down to celebrating graduation.

Hundreds of celebrities have been handed honorary degrees from universities all across the UK. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty was handed a doctorate, yes a doctorate, shortly after she left the celebrity Big Brother house.

Student Finance have made a complete mess of this years loan applications and thousands of students still have not had their applications processed even though the first semester of university is almost over.

The company had a record breaking number of applications this year but seems to have made no allowances for this fact. Meaning that some students are still awaiting payments.

Whilst students are being bailed out by universities by deferral of tuition payments. Students are still being faced with heavy living costs with no financial aid.

“I am furious,” writes Graham in Felixstowe who says his funding application remains unresolved while his accommodation has to be paid. “What an utter shambles.”

Derek Ross, deputy chief executive of the Student Loans Company, has promised: “Everyone who applied on time should be paid on time.”

Tell that to the thousands of students still awaiting funds from them.
